No species in the UK symbolises the beauty and harshness of winter more strongly than the ptarmigan. The ultimate mountain survivors, these hardy birds live above 600m altitude in the high corries of our finest upland scenery. They are exceptionally well camouflaged, and require good fieldcraft to approach.

This photography day is aimed at enthusiastic wildlife photographers and bird watchers with a good level of fitness. The day requires around 3.5 miles of walking with some steep uphill sections, probably in snow.

As with my guided mountain hare photography workshops, I am there to provide as much or as little photographic guidance as you require. Whilst many of my guests are enthusiastic nature lovers wishing to take their photography to the next level, it is equally common for me to guide award-winning semi-professionals.

I’m also there to provide guidance when it comes to being out in the winter hills, which can feel like quite an adventurous experience for many. I am a highly experienced hill-walker and mountaineer, regularly writing articles for publications such as The Great Outdoors Magazine, UKHillwalking and Walkhighlands.

What’s included?
-A full day of guided ptarmigan photography.
– The chance to photograph red grouse and often snow bunting.
– Tuition in field-craft, approach, and essential skills for upland wildlife photography.
– Advice on image post-production if required.

Transport –
Typically we meet in Aviemore and I will drive us the rest of the way. Access to your own vehicle is preferable. If this is a problem, please be in touch and we’ll have a chat to discuss options. The meeting point is also flexible.
